Introduction to Perspio Geofences

The Geofences Module in Perspio enables businesses to define, manage, and monitor virtual geographic zones that can be linked to operational logic—such as grouping assets, triggering alerts, and generating usage reports based on location. Geofences are especially useful for site-based tracking, alerting, and analytics. They ensure asset activity is correctly contextualised within operational zones like depots, customer sites, construction zones, warehouses, and more.

Navigating the Geofences Module

Once inside the Geofences module (accessible from the sidebar or the star-shaped favourites menu), you will see two main panes:

Left Pane – Geofence List

  • Search Bar: Use the top-left search field to filter geofences by name or metadata.

  • Categories: Geofences are grouped into expandable categories such as Customer Site, Depots, Work Zones, etc.

  • Geofence Items: Each listed geofence shows its name and a quick icon preview of its type on the left and one on the right indicating the Geofence Scope and Number of Assets. Clicking one will open that specific geofence.

Right Pane – Map View

  • All geofences are displayed spatially. Clicking on any shape opens the Geofence.

  • A floating zoom control and search bar at the top allow for manual navigation and search of locations.

Screen Controls and Features

  • Search Geofences (Left Panel): Filters the list of geofences as you type.

  • Collapse Sidebar: A left-facing arrow (<<) allows you to hide the sidebar and maximise map view.

  • Add/Filter Geofences: Depending on your permissions, a gear icon (⚙️) or plus sign (+) may be visible to create new or filter existing geofences.

  • Geofence Count Indicator: A summary line at the bottom of the panel shows how many geofences are currently listed.

  • Map Layers Control (Bottom Right): Lets you switch between satellite, terrain, and map layers.

Important Notes on Geofence Logic in Groups

When you add a geofence to an Asset Group:

  • Assets will only appear in the group when physically inside the geofenced area.

  • If an asset leaves the geofence, it is automatically removed from the group.

  • If it re-enters the geofence, it is automatically re-added.

  • This logic makes the group dynamic and location-aware, without requiring manual asset assignment.

Example use case: A “Botany Branch” group might use a geofence for the site boundary. Any hire vehicle arriving at the site will automatically appear in the group and disappear once it departs.

Best Practices

  • Use clear and consistent naming (e.g. “Branch - Botany”, “Customer Name - Heathrow”) to improve searchability.

  • Assign geofences to categories to help with filtering and hierarchy-based access.

  • Avoid overlapping geofences where logic might conflict (e.g. for event triggers or group rules).

  • Regularly audit your geofences to ensure locations are still valid and correctly shaped.

Troubleshooting

If geofences are not appearing correctly:

  • Ensure zoom level is appropriate—the map may not display all labels when zoomed out.

  • Confirm GPS coordinates are within bounds.

  • Check if the geofence is active and visible in the selected category.

Common Use Cases

  • Transport/Logistics: Trigger alerts when trucks arrive or depart depots.

  • Hire Companies: Track vehicle utilisation based on when assets are on or off hire zones.

  • Cold Chain: Monitor dwell time at customer delivery sites.

  • Construction: Automate check-in/check-out logic for plant and equipment.
