Installing a Geotab GO9

This article explains how to physically install and mount a Geotab GO9 device, connect power and communication interfaces, confirm hardware readiness, and verify that reporting begins correctly once commissioned. Manufacturer references are included for deeper hardware and wiring details.

The Geotab GO9 is a compact GPS and vehicle telematics device designed to connect to a vehicle’s diagnostic port (OBD-II) or hard-wired harness for fleet tracking, engine data (via CAN/OBD), event logging, and driver behaviour monitoring.

GO9 key capabilities:

  • GNSS positioning (GPS/GLONASS)

  • Cellular connectivity (4G/LTE CAT M1 / NB-IoT depending on region)

  • Access to J-1979 OBD data (engine, RPM, fuel level, DTCs)

  • Digital inputs/outputs for accessories and logic

Safety and Pre-Installation Considerations

Before installation:

  • Follow automotive electrical safety practices (disconnect battery if required)

  • Confirm asset is stationary and ignition is off

  • Vehicle electronics should be protected by appropriate fusing

  • Remember that the GO9 will interact with vehicle systems via OBD/CAN; follow site/installation policies

Physical Installation

Geotab GO9 can be installed in two primary ways: OBD-II port or hard-wired installation. We ALWAYS recommend choosing the hard-wired installation for better performance and security.

A. OBD-II Port Installation (Preferred for Vehicles)

The GO9 often ships with an OBD-II plug cable.

  1. Locate the Vehicle OBD-II Port

    • Under the driver’s side dash

    • Near steering column or footwell

    • Standard 16-pin diagnostic connector

  2. Connect the GO9 OBD Cable

    • Firmly plug the GO9 OBD harness into the vehicle’s OBD port

    • Ensure a secure connection without loose pins

  3. Position the GO9 Module

    • Tuck behind dash panels

    • Avoid locations that pinch the cable

    • Ensure the device is stable and not hanging

  4. Reinstall Trim

    • Replace any panels carefully, ensuring the cable is not stressed

B. Hard-Wired Installation (Powered via Vehicle Harness)

Used when OBD is inaccessible or a tamper-resistant installation is required.

  1. Power Source Identification

    • +12V Constant (Battery): Connect main power wire

    • Ground (Chassis): Secure to a clean metal ground point

    • Ignition (Optional): Connect to ignition/ACC feed for accurate key state detection

  2. Fuse Protection

    • Place appropriate fuses close to the power feed

    • Follow vehicle electrical guidelines

  3. CAN/OBD Connections (if required)

    • For engine data, connect CAN-H and CAN-L as per vehicle diagnostics

    • Avoid interfering with existing modules

  4. Secure GO9 Module

    • Use cable ties or adhesive pads

    • Keep module away from hot, moving, or high vibration areas

Verifying Operation

Location and Telemetry Updates

Open the Asset Inspector in Perspio and confirm:

  • Recent GPS timestamps

  • Correct latitude/longitude updates

  • Movement tracking where applicable

Telemetry Signal Checks

If telemetry does not appear:

  • Check device power/ground integrity

  • Validate installation location is free of GPS blockage

  • Contact servicedesk@perspio.io if assistance is needed

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

No Data Reporting

  • Test cellular reception at installation site

  • Verify power and ground consistency

Poor GPS Fix

  • Adjust mounting orientation

  • Avoid mounting fully enclosed by metal


No Device Records in Perspio

  • Confirm correct tenant context

  • Verify the device was added with correct IMEI

CAN Data Not Present

  • Confirm OBD/CAN connection and protocol compatibility

  • Validate CAN pins and wiring integrity
