In short: Oyster Edge provides more flexible input/output integration and edge processing capabilities alongside robust connectivity, making it suitable for sophisticated deployments that may include sensors, digital inputs, and expanded programmability. Oyster 3 4G is ideal where standard GPS telematics with basic sensor support is sufficient.

Safety and Pre-Deployment Preparation

Before installation:

  • Verify that the SIM/Roaming profile and network coverage (LTE-M/NB-IoT) are appropriate for the installation location.

  • Understand that optimal GPS reception will improve location accuracy and ultimately improve asset visibility.

Physical Installation

1. Choose a Mounting Location

The Oyster Edge is designed for wire-free installation and has multiple mounting options such as screws, bolts, cable ties, or industrial adhesives.

When selecting a location:

  • Aim for a spot that maximizes exposure to open sky for GNSS signal reception.

  • Avoid placing the device inside metal enclosures or deep within confined spaces that could obstruct GPS or cellular signals.

  • Choose a location that minimizes risk of physical damage, dislodgement, or tampering.

  • Ensure it does not face direct heat sources or very high ambient temperatures, which can accelerate battery depletion.

For recommended mounting techniques and placement tips from the manufacturer, reference the official installation guide: Mounting and Installation [Oyster 3]

2. Install the Batteries

  • Install 3 × AA Lithium Batteries (lithium batteries recommended for extended lifespan).

  • Confirm that polarity is correct and the battery compartment is fully closed.

  • Battery selection impacts overall device life and reporting intervals; consult the datasheet for guidance.

3. Securing the Device

  • Use provided screws, cable ties, or adhesive mounts based on asset structure and exposure conditions.

  • Verify device orientation and stability once fixed.

  • After mount, check that the device remains secure under light movement or vibration.

4. Locate the Oyster Edge Device in Perspio

Follow the steps:

  • Open Perspio Asset Inspector.

  • Locate the Device on the list or enter the IMEI/serial number exactly as printed on the device label.

  • Confirm that the device reports recent data (locations, events and activity).

Verifying Data and Behaviour

Location Accuracy

View the asset’s location on the map:

  • Confirm that location updates reflect physical movement when the asset is relocated.

  • Check that refresh times comply with configured intervals.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

Device Not Reporting in Perspio

  • Check that the correct tenant and user permissions are active.

  • Confirm the location network compatibility.

  • Verify that the batteries are installed correctly and are fresh.

Poor GPS Fix or Missing Reports

  • Relocate the device to a position with better sky visibility.

  • Avoid obstructions such as deep compartments or metal enclosures.

Unacceptable Battery Life

  • Ensure only Lithium AA Battery Cells are used in the device.

  • Ensure that temperature extremes are not present at the installation site.
