Embedded Geofences (Weather Zones, Toll Roads, and State Zones)

The Geofences Module in Perspio enables users to visualise and interact with location-based data using both user-created and system-generated (embedded) geofences. This article focuses on Embedded Geofences, which include: Weather Zones, Australian Toll Zones, Australian State Zones and US State Zones.

These embedded geofences are pre-configured by Perspio and maintained in the background, helping streamline compliance, alerting, operational automation, and data segmentation—without requiring user intervention.


What Are Embedded Geofences?

Embedded geofences are non-editable zones automatically available to all users. Unlike user-created geofences, which are manually drawn and managed, embedded geofences:

  • Cannot be edited or deleted

  • Are regularly updated by the system

  • Are available to all tenants by default (subject to configuration)

They are used in a variety of modules and automation logic across the platform.


Types of Embedded Geofences

Zone Type Description
Weather Zones Dynamic areas representing current or forecasted adverse weather conditions
Australian Toll Zones Geofences mapped to toll road segments across Australia
Australian States Outlines of official Australian states and territories
US States Outlines of all 50 US states and the District of Columbia

Use Cases by Zone Type

Weather Zones

  • Trigger workflows when assets enter areas impacted by storms, bushfires, floods, or heatwaves.

  • Enrich reports with weather-related context.

  • Prevent asset allocation to risky areas.

Australian Toll Zones

  • Generate toll usage alerts and charges to your customers via ERP integrations.

  • Attribute cost data to specific journeys.

State Zones (Australia and US)

  • Segment reports and dashboards geographically.

  • Automate workflows by regional boundaries (e.g. regulatory compliance).

  • Create Dynamic Groups based on state-level location logic.

 

 

How to Use Embedded Geofences in Other Modules

Workflows Trigger alerts or actions when an asset enters a specific zone (e.g. Queensland or Texas)
Reports Filter by toll zones or state-based locations for compliance or billing
Dashboards Group charts by state or weather zone for trend analysis
Dynamic Groups Automatically assign assets based on their presence in a state or embedded zone

Limitations and Notes

  • Embedded geofences are read-only.

  • You cannot manually assign embedded geofences to assets via the Geofence Members tab.

  • Assets are evaluated against embedded zones dynamically, based on GPS data.


Example Scenarios

  • A truck driving through M5 (Sydney) triggers a toll entry alert and automatically attributes cost in a monthly usage report.

  • A refrigerated asset enters a bushfire-prone zone in Victoria—a workflow pauses the temperature compliance logic and alerts the site manager.

  • An asset moves into Florida (US)—a Dynamic Group updates to reflect all assets currently operating in that state.

  • You want to compare downtime trends across states—use the Australian States geofences to group your Dashboard widgets by geography.
